Building rapport through instructor-to-student interactions and facilitating student-to-student interactions can help promote student motivation and intellectual risk taking. In face-to-face classes, some of these interactions happen spontaneously through small talk and physical proximity to others. How can we intentionally structure and foster this same sense of connection in remote learning? In this workshop designed for associate instructors (graduate students and postdocs in other roles are also welcome), participants will learn how a sense of community can help foster learning and how to use research-based strategies to increase connectedness online.

Facilitators:

  • Slande Erole, MA, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Political Science; Teaching Assistant Consulting Fellow - Center for Educational Effectiveness
  • Alicia Garcia, MA., Ph.D. Candidate, School of Education; Teaching Assistant Consulting Fellow - Center for Educational Effectiveness
