Contending with Generative AI

Event Date

Location

Like it or not, generative AI is already in our classrooms and on our students’ devices. As instructors, how can we educate ourselves about the capabilities and limitations of generative AI in order to help our students make informed, ethical decisions about how and when to engage with generative AI (if at all)? In this workshop, we will explore how generative AI works, review some of the ethical considerations around the development and use of this technology, and apply a learning outcomes-oriented approach to understanding the impact of generative AI in the classroom. Along the way, we will also discuss recent survey data on student perceptions and usage of generative AI, and potential implications for classroom policy and practices. Facilitators: Ian Lim, Physics, and Daisy Underhill, Philosophy.
