Test Scoring and Gradescope Scanning

The Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE) offers Scantron test scoring and scanning for Gradescope services for UC Davis instructors. To provide timely support and ensure equipment is available, services are offered by appointment.

  • Appointment length: Most Scantron scoring sessions take approximately 25–30 minutes when materials are prepared in advance.

Multiple-Choice Test Scoring Options

CEE offers two options for grading multiple-choice exams using UCD Scantron Form 2000. Choose the option that best meets your grading and reporting needs.

Computer-Assisted Test Scoring

Computer-assisted scoring uses test-scoring software to process multiple-choice exams and provide a detailed analysis of exam questions. This option also generates a spreadsheet that can be used to import grades into Canvas.

Stand-Alone Machine Scoring

The stand-alone grading machine allows instructors to mark incorrect answers directly on students’ Scantron forms.

Before Your Appointment

Preparing your materials in advance will help your scoring session run efficiently.

Prepare Your Scantrons

  • Remove Scantrons from all test booklets.
  • Stack the Scantrons with the cut corners aligned at the bottom left.
  • Confirm that each student has bubbled in their student ID number.
  • Confirm that each student has bubbled in the appropriate test version: A, B, C, or D. If there is only one version, all students must select A.
  • Do not staple Scantrons.
  • Complete the answer key in pencil.

What to Bring

Required:

  • Completed Scantron forms
  • An answer key with the correct answers bubbled in using pencil

Recommended:

  • A student roster with ID numbers, since Scantrons without student IDs cannot be graded
  • An assistant if you have a large number of Scantrons and may need help organizing them

  • How do I make an appointment?

  • Submit the appointment request form or email [email protected] at least one to two business days in advance.

    Include your preferred appointment date and time, the service you need, and the total number of Scantrons you plan to score. You will receive a confirmation email with additional instructions.

  • What type of Scantron form should I use?
  • Use only the UCD Scantron Form 2000. The form is available in red and blue, and either color may be used. Both versions are processed by the scoring machine in the same manner.
  • Where can I purchase Scantron forms?
  • UCD Scantron Form 2000 is available at the Campus Store, the Silo Market, and the vending machine in Olson Hall.
  • How long does a scoring session take?
  • Most scoring sessions take approximately 25–30 minutes when materials are prepared in advance. Instructors can typically score up to 350 Scantrons in under 30 minutes.
  • Why is UCD Scantron Form 2000 the standard?
  • UCD Scantron Form 2000:
    • Works with the stand-alone scoring machines
    • Includes space for 100 questions with five answer choices
    • Allows up to four test versions
    • Accommodates a nine-digit student ID number
    • Accommodates subjective scores up to 999
    • Supports scoring options such as weighted answers and penalty points
    • Allows for computer-assisted analysis of exam questions
