ARC: Meaningful Participation in the Age of AI

What makes learning with humans different from learning from a chatbot? As AI changes how students access information, generate ideas, and complete academic work, this question becomes increasingly important. If students can turn to AI for information, explanations, and even assistance with academic tasks, how can we design learning experiences that invite them to engage more deeply?
In this workshop, we will explore the ARC framework, a model for supporting student engagement through three interconnected dimensions: Affective, Relational, and Cognitive engagement. Participants will consider how students’ emotions, sense of connection, and cognitive investment shape their learning experiences—and how these dimensions can be intentionally supported through course and activity design. At the center of the framework is a simple idea: relationships change value. Relationships can transform how students experience learning by making the work, the classroom, and their own contributions matter in ways that AI alone cannot replicate.
Participants will have the opportunity to apply the ARC framework to their own teaching contexts and identify practical strategies for increasing student engagement in their classrooms.
Creating your AI Syllabus Statement

As generative AI becomes an increasingly common part of students’ academic lives, instructors face important questions about when, how, and why AI should—or should not—be used for learning. In this workshop, participants will explore key considerations for developing an AI syllabus statement that aligns with their teaching goals, assignments, and values. Using a guided decision-making process, participants will reflect on the role of AI in their courses, consider different approaches to AI use, and develop or revise a syllabus statement for their own teaching context. Participants will leave with a clearer approach to communicating their expectations and a draft AI syllabus statement they can adapt for their course.
Know Your Students: Using Student Data to Promote Student Learning

Students learn best when their instructors know who their students are. In this workshop, Assistant Director Matthew Steinwachs (CEE) and Dr. Patricia Turner (CEE), will guide participants through the use of Know Your Students, a UC Davis-based web application that gives instructors an additional method for understanding key characteristics of their class. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the Know Your Students tool and share thoughts and experiences about evidence-based, inclusive teaching strategies that promote student learning.
